Athena is the symbol of wisdom and courage. Her life’s passion was to protect and lead the people of Athens and this in turn lead to them giving her the name of, ‘The City Protectress’
This rare 18th century model of Athena, is an excellent example of an early lost wax Lead casting from the Low Countries. Most certainly Dutch.The desire to recreate the spirit of ancient Greece and Rome in the form of Lead Garden Ornaments, reached its peak in 18th century Europe. Flemish sculptors such as Van Nost the elder were at the forefront of this movement, along with many others from the Low Countries.
